Wet day in Warwick? The town’s best indoor sights are all within a few minutes’ walk of the Market Place: a free county museum, a medieval courtyard still home to old soldiers, one of the largest churches in Britain and, of course, the castle. Here’s what to do in Warwick when it rains, with prices and opening times from each place’s own website, and a few tips for staying dry.

Market Hall Museum (free)

The county museum fills the 17th-century Market Hall in the middle of the Market Place, telling the story of Warwickshire from the Warwickshire Bear to Roman coin hoards found in the south of the county. Entry is free, it’s open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm (closed Sunday and Monday), and there’s a café and shop. Free highlight tours of about 45 minutes, led by volunteer guides, can be booked through the county’s Heritage Box Office. See the Market Hall Museum’s website.

The Lord Leycester

At the top of the High Street by the West Gate, the Lord Leycester is a medieval courtyard of timber-framed halls, some parts going back to the 12th century, and still home to the Brethren, a community of former servicemen. Its Great Hall and Guild Hall date from the late 15th century, so there’s plenty to see out of the rain.

  • Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm (last entry 4pm), and bank holiday Mondays.
  • Adults £12, over-65s and students £10.50, ages 5 to 17 £6.50, under-5s free, family (up to four) £27. Tickets give free return visits for a year.
  • The Brethren lead guided tours on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 11am, for £4 on top of admission.

More in our Lord Leycester guide.

St Mary’s Church

The Collegiate Church of St Mary, just east of the Market Place, has a Norman crypt from the church founded in 1123, the medieval Beauchamp Chapel with the tombs of the Earls of Warwick and Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and a tower you can climb. Entry is free (donations welcome), with charges for the tower and the Beauchamp Chapel and chancel.

Check the day before you go: in winter the church is open to visitors only on Fridays and Saturdays (10.30am to 5pm) and Sundays (midday to 5pm), and times can change for weddings, funerals and baptisms. More in our St Mary’s guide.

Warwick Castle on a wet day

Most of a castle day is outdoors, so it’s best for a showery day rather than a downpour. Tickets start at £26 booked online (£39 on the day), and the Castle Dungeon, a live-actor horror show about plague and punishment, is indoors (an extra charge; not for under-10s). Over half-term (24 October to 1 November 2026) the castle is open 10am to 5pm for The Haunted Castle. Everything else is in our Warwick Castle guide.

Shows, concerts and Halloween

Bridge House Theatre at Warwick School has plays, concerts and comedy, and St Mary’s holds candlelit concerts and lunchtime recitals. This half-term St John’s House has a Halloween Haunted House: see Halloween in Warwick. Everything else is in the Warwick events calendar.

Tips for a wet day in Warwick

  • Plan a short loop. The Market Hall Museum is in the Market Place, St Mary’s is a couple of minutes east, and the Lord Leycester is at the far end of the High Street.
  • Pick the right day. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays, the Lord Leycester on Mondays, and St Mary’s from Monday to Thursday in winter.
  • Parking. Two of the council’s car parks give you 2 hours free: see our Warwick parking guide.
  • Eating out with children? See where kids eat free in Warwick.

If it’s raining all day: further afield

The British Motor Museum at Gaydon, about 20 minutes’ drive away, is almost entirely indoors. Stratford-upon-Avon, about 20 minutes’ drive away, has Shakespeare’s Birthplace, a tropical butterfly house and three museums: see What’s up, Stratford?’s rainy day guide to Stratford.
