New Day Case Unit Approved at Warwick Hospital

A 12-bay medical day case unit at Warwick Hospital on Lakin Road was given planning permission on 19 October 2026, open weekdays from 8am to 8pm.

A new medical day case unit at Warwick Hospital has been given planning permission. Warwick District Council approved the single-storey building on the hospital’s Lakin Road site on Monday 19 October 2026 (application W/25/1650), with officers deciding it under delegated powers rather than at committee.

The unit is where patients come in for planned treatment and go home the same day. Specialists and GPs refer patients for treatment in areas such as gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, cardiology, rheumatology, endocrinology and palliative care. The council’s report says the aim is to make the hospital run more efficiently and avoid admissions that aren’t needed, which takes pressure off A&E.

What’s being built

  • Where: the site of the old linen unit and bed decontamination unit, beside Car Park C. The decontamination unit already has separate approval to be demolished.
  • The building: a prefabricated, flat-roofed block about 20 metres by 20 metres, finished in grey. It holds 12 recliner or bed bays, a side room, a clinic room and a room for blood tests, plus staff offices and a plant room.
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm, with no overnight or weekend care.
  • Patients: about 25 to 30 a day. The hospital already has a day case unit with the same number of patients that is open until 6pm, so this moves an existing service into a new building with longer evening hours. The transport statement says there will be no extra staff or patient trips.
  • Parking: six spaces, two accessible spaces, two drop-off spaces, an ambulance bay and six cycle spaces next to the unit. Everyone else uses the hospital’s existing car parks.

Neighbours’ concerns

Four letters of objection raised security at the back of the building, privacy, trees, noise from the outdoor plant and new lighting. Warwick Town Council lodged a holding objection over noise. It withdrew this in September, after the council’s environmental health team was satisfied with a noise report. To answer these concerns, the permission says:

  • the unit can’t open until the noise measures are in place, including a 1.8-metre acoustic fence by the condenser units
  • noisy building work is limited to 7.30am to 5pm on weekdays and 7.30am to 1pm on Saturdays, with nothing on Sundays or bank holidays
  • no outside lighting without the council’s approval
  • a landscaping scheme (to soften views towards homes on Green Lane) and an electric car charger must be agreed within six months.

When will it open?

Neither the planning papers nor South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Warwick Hospital, has given a date. Work must start within three years. We’ll update this story when the trust announces one. The approval was first reported by Warwick Nub News. Going to an appointment? See our Warwick bus times and parking guide.
