St John’s House in Warwick is turning into a haunted house for October half-term, with a family adventure by day from Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October and two candlelit evenings of ghost stories for older audiences on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October.

St John’s Haunted House: 29 to 31 October

The daytime event, run by Heritage and Culture Warwickshire, is built around the tale of Sleeping Beauty. Children follow clues through the house’s rooms, make potions and slime, explore a messy play area and a Witch’s Kitchen, and make Halloween crafts to take home. There’s a playdough zone for younger visitors, and costumes are encouraged.

  • When: 10am to 5pm, Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October. A visit takes 75 to 90 minutes.
  • Tickets: £12 for children, £6 for adults, and free for children two and under (book them a child ticket if they want to do the slime and crafts). Spaces are limited.
  • Parking: disabled parking at St John’s House has to be reserved in advance. Otherwise, use the paid St Nicholas Park car park.

An Evening of Ghost Stories: 28 and 29 October

On both evenings at 7pm (doors 6.30pm), Toby Burchell of Behind the Door Productions performs two classic ghost stories by candlelight: Charles Dickens’ The Signalman and Arthur Conan Doyle’s Lot No. 249. The show lasts about 1 hour 40 minutes, including a 20-minute interval, and the bar is open.

Tickets are £18 plus a booking fee, for ages 12 and over. The performance is on the first floor, and there’s no disabled access.

Both events are booked through Heritage and Culture Warwickshire’s box office. For everything else on in town over half-term, from The Haunted Castle to the free pumpkin giveaway, see our Halloween in Warwick guide.
