Plans to reorganise Warwickshire’s councils have been paused while the Government reviews its local government reorganisation programme, and the local elections due in May 2027, including Warwick District Council’s, will go ahead on the existing boundaries. For Warwick residents, that means Warwick District Council, Warwickshire County Council and Warwick Town Council all carry on as now for the time being.

What’s happened

The Government announced a review of the programme after updated legal advice. Warwickshire is one of 14 areas where reorganisation proposals will be reviewed and paused while it considers whether the process is legally robust and in line with its priorities, Warwick District Council said on 8 September.

Under reorganisation, councils with two tiers, like Warwickshire’s county council and five district and borough councils, are expected to be replaced by fewer unitary councils that run all local services.

What the councils say

A joint statement from Warwickshire’s six councils said they did not yet know “the full implications” for the county, would keep working together and with the Government, and would update residents, staff and councillors when there is more clarity. In the meantime, they say, they remain focused on delivering services.

We’ll report what the review means for Warwick as soon as the Government or the councils say more. For the latest, see our Warwick news.
