The Lord Leycester, by the West Gate at the top of the High Street, is one of the best-preserved medieval courtyards in England, and still home to the Brethren, a community of former servicemen. Here’s what a visit costs, when it’s open and what’s on, from its own website.

Tours by the Brethren

The Brethren lead guided tours on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 11am. A tour costs £4 on top of admission, and it’s worth booking ahead.

A short history

Building on the site began with a chapel in 1126. In the 14th century the Earl of Warwick gave it to the town’s United Guild of the Holy Trinity and St George, and the Guild Hall, Great Hall and Master’s House followed in the late 15th century. Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, turned it into a home for old soldiers more than 450 years ago, and it’s still a veterans’ charity today, with two acres of gardens on the last surviving stretch of Warwick’s medieval town wall.
